The nominations for the 2017 Writers Guild Awards were announced today, honoring the best in television and new media, and Westworld has snagged nods in two categories!

HBO’s new hit, which wrapped up last night with the season finale “The Bicameral Mind,” will be competing for the “Drama Series” award against established heavy hitters Game of Thrones, The Americans, and Better Call Saul, plus another freshman series, Netflix’s Stranger Things.

If Westworld wins, the award will be shared by Ed Brubaker, Bridget Carpenter, Dan Dietz, Halley Gross, Lisa Joy, Katherine Lingenfelter, Dominic Mitchell, Jonathan Nolan, Roberto Patino, Daniel T. Thomsen, Charles Yu, and HBO.

Westworld also picked up a well-deserved nomination in the category of “New Series.” It’s going to face stiff competition from four other stellar shows, including FX’s Atlanta and Better Things, Stranger Things once again, and NBC’s dramedy This Is Us.

It’s exciting to see Westworld diving into awards season already! I think it has has strong chances with the Emmys and Golden Globes as well. As for the WGAs, the winners will be announced by comedian Patton Oswalt on Sunday, February 19th, 2017 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.

Congratulations and best of luck to the writing team of Westworld!

  1. So glad Westworld’s already grabbing noms! I do hope it gets to win at least in one category; in my opinion the first season was f*cking great and can’t wait what they deliver on the second one. Here’s to 2018.

  2. They should win both categories IMO. I love GoT, and certain s6 episodes were spectacular, but I don’t think GoT’s season overall can compare. Westworld was simply phenomenal from start to finish.

    • Ness,

Yeah, I thought S6 of GoT was great but Westworld was more consistent and the story moved better. As an overall show, I think GoT’s still better (mainly because we have more seasons) but Westworld did kill it with its first.

  3. It pains me to write this – because GOT is my first and undying love – but I hope for Westworld to win. In my opinion, the writing is simply better.
