Not many people are privy to how it feels getting nominated for an Emmy as a leading actress in an incredibly popular and successful television show. Evan Rachel Wood, however, is now one of these people, having earned her first lead actress Emmy nomination for her work as Dolores on Westworld‘s first season.
Wood found some time today to speak with People about her nomination, and how proud she is to be part of a show that just received an immense amount of recognition (leading all scripted series with 22 Emmy nominations).
“It’s so funny – I try not to work myself up about these things because the anticipation will just kill you, so I didn’t realize it was today,” the actress admits of this morning’s nominations announcement. “So you get woken up by calls and texts, and it’s the best way to wake up. It’s almost better when it’s a surprise!”
The depth of Wood’s performance, especially as her character is forced to deal with abuse and trauma at the hands of the park’s guests, is no doubt a large reason why the actress is so deserving of her Emmy nod. Wood has been open about the fact that she herself has twice experienced sexual assault, a fact that made her story arc difficult, but in the end all the more satisfying for the actress:
“Everything that Dolores goes through – the years of abuse and trauma and beyond that, just the terrifying realization she has about the world around her and about herself – all of that was really challenging and really intense. But then to have the amazing payoff of her taking control of her life, the phoenix rising out of the ashes, it was just such an epic arc in her character.”
Even with a show as brilliantly conceived as Westworld, it’s always a guessing game as to how the audience will react to a show’s freshman season. Wood admits that the positive reception the show’s first season has received is one of the most gratifying feelings. “I love this show so much – it’s the best job I’ve ever had, “says Wood. “It was really a once in a lifetime gig. The fact that people are loving it as much as we do is the best feeling.”
So, how does Wood plan on celebrating her and her show’s nominations? “Honestly, the best way to celebrate is just to get back in and start filming season 2,” says the actress. “That’s going to be the biggest party for me!” Luckily for Wood, she may not have to wait long to begin this unique celebration.
