Thandie Newton on Her Unusual Westworld Audition; Jimmi Simpson Comments on William’s Role in Season 2

Maeve Millay on Westworld

Maeve Millay – one of the fan favorite characters on Westworld – is expertly portrayed by actress Thandie Newton. It would be difficult to imagine anyone else for the role, but Newton admits in a new interview that her audition with showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy did not go as smoothly as she had hoped!

In a clip from the Harry show, Newton shares a story with host Harry Connick, Jr. about her unusual Westworld audition. “I was in London, and I actually just had my son, Booker – he was maybe 4 months old – and the showrunner Jonah Nolan and his wife, Lisa Joy…I was talking to [them] on Skype.” Newton says. “And we started our conversation talking about Westworld, the show, and it was going on quite a long time, and I could hear my baby out the door, and he wanted to be nursed.”

Newton tried to continue on with the audition, but she confesses it wasn’t possible. “You know how it is, ladies, when your kid needs you, everything is firing up. And I said to Jonah, ‘Jonah, I’m so, so sorry, I’m going to have to bring my baby here.’ And I thought, ‘This is going to lose me the job. It’s gonna lose me the job!’” Luckily for Newton, Nolan and Joy could relate. “My husband brought in the baby and I ended up breastfeeding my kid while talking to Jonah…and then, do you know what happened? Lisa came onto the screen breastfeeding her little baby.”

In other news, Entertainment Weekly reports that Jimmi Simpson (William) is returning to Westworld for season 2. This comes as no surprise to readers of this site, as we broke the story of his involvement last July. In the EW article, they quote comments Simpson made to reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena yesterday. In addition to confirming his return, Simpson appears to let us know what we won’t see from his character next season.

After admitting he “pop[s] in,” Simpson states, ““I wish there was exploration between the time when Williams’ heart was broken and we see the result. I want to know how much it takes and how hard he tried to not go there.” He adds, “But I don’t write the story.” Unfortunately it looks like we won’t get to see William’s transformation into the Man in Black. Perhaps William will appear in more of Dolores’ memories, as she struggles to navigate her new role in the park.

What do you think William will be doing in season 2? Let us know in the comments!

  1. Chris,

Who knows? Maybe he is feeding us misinformation, or maybe he really only has a small part to play (probably in Dolores’ memories) next season. Guess we’ll find out in a few months…
