We are halfway to a new Westworld episode, and that means we have more photos courtesy of HBO! The upcoming episode is titled “The Riddle of the Sphinx” and is written by Gina Atwater and Jonathan Nolan. Lisa Joy makes her directorial debut this week, as you can see commemorated in the above photo. The synopsis reads: “Is this now? If you’re looking forward, you’re looking in the wrong direction,” so I think it’s safe to say we will see more flashbacks. Check out the rest of the photos below the cut!
Here we have another shot of Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) with a drone host. Is this a flashback to before he and Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) found Peter Abernathy (Louis Herthum)? His clothing is different, so perhaps he returns to this facility or finds a similar one later. It could even be a place he visited even farther in the past and has just now accessed the memory. Also, the objects on the table are the same shape and size as the host “brains” but are red instead of white, perhaps to differentiate them as special. Could this be an experimental project to upload humans’ consciousness into host bodies, in an effort to cheat death?
We will see the return of Major Craddock (Jonathan Tucker) who doesn’t look to pleased here. Is he plotting revenge against Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) for her betrayal?
Finally, we have a shot of William (Ed Harris) in what looks to be Las Mudas – the home of Lawrence (Clifton Collins Jr.). He may want to tread carefully if the resident hosts have begun to remember their pasts, as he massacred Lawrence’s entire family (except his daughter) on his last trip here.
In an interview last September, Jonathan Nolan spoke about his wife taking the helm on episode four this season. He quipped, “[She] made it far more violent and disturbing than we ever intended. It was quite a placid episode, and Lisa has kind of turned it into a bloodbath.” Who knows if he was joking or not, but perhaps we should prepare ourselves just in case!
