Westworld is coming to San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, complete with an immersive, interactive experience that will give you a taste of what a trip to the park is like. The “Westworld Experience Center” is open July 20-22, with appointment times starting at 9:30 am Pacific. The Discover Westworld website even has a new – rather glitchy – video to entice you to visit.
Some lucky fans were given the opportunity to tour the center a day early (lucky them!) and report on their experience. As Natalie Abrams of Entertainment Weekly describes it, “you’re greeted by a duo of ‘Hosts’ who take your name and check you into your appointment.” Once inside, there are costumes and weapons on display, as well as helpful hosts offering advice, such as “many guests seem to be a fan of the shotgun because of its easy access and power. This place is all about power.”
Josh Wigler at The Hollywood Reporter writes that after a brief wait, a Delos representative appears. As you walk down the hallway, there is a door marked “SW” through which you can hear the faint clashing of swords. The rep takes you into a fitting room, where you are given a personality assessment with fun questions like the following:
- “Have you ever been to Westworld before?”
- “Have you ever stayed at a luxury resort?”
- “If you could push a button and cure all of the world’s ails but you would have to cut the population in half, would you push the button, have someone else push the button, or destroy the button and the people who invented it?”
When the interrogation is over, you are given a white or black hat (which you get to keep!) and shown a welcome video. Wigler reports that the video is full of glitches, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) “reciting bone-chilling verses that clearly stem from her new Wyatt personality,” and what appears to be new footage from season two! It shows “the Man in Black (Ed Harris) sitting at a bar, blood spatter all over his face, but otherwise looking as cool and collected as ever.” I guess he survives his encounter with the army of hosts that appear in the season one finale?

Finally, you enter the Mariposa Saloon. David Crow of Den of Geek reports that mixologist Paul McGee of Chicago’s Lost Lake and the Milk Room leads a team of bartenders in preparing classic drinks with a kick. “Working from the Jerry Thomas Bartenders Guide of 1862, cocktails included glasses of blended sherry, the San Francisco: Blue Blazer with literally burning whiskey, and a brandy-laced dessert.”

Of course, the saloon wouldn’t be complete without the player piano, manned by the ghost of the dearly departed pianist (dubbed Gary by Wigler of THR) and spattered with his blood. It plays many of the tunes featured in season one, including Ramin Djawadi’s Emmy nominated Westworld main title song. You may hear another iconic and familiar theme of Djawadi’s as well.
If you are attending SDCC and want to experience it for yourself, you’d better book your reservation ASAP. The event runs on 30 minute intervals, with six people allowed per session. The appointment desk at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel is open from Thursday the 20th through Saturday the 22nd until all available slots are filled.
